Finding the lost city

Sometimes I think it’s sad that I was born into an age when there be no dragons on the maps, no white spots to fill in. I’m very much a fan of the romantic notion of a few sturdy explorers braving the unknown to satisfy their own curiosity and desire for adventure; I have a comfortable illusion that I would be one of them if I were only born a hundred years earlier. Of course, I probably lack the necessary strength in all aspects — muscles, psyche — plus, I’m not nearly British and racist enough.

This article is about the British explorer Percy Harrison Fawcett, who disappeared in the Amazon in 1925 on the hunt for the city of Z, his version of El Dorado, and the efforts by modern scientists that make them conclude that, “With some caveats, El Dorado really did exist.” Well worth a read.
