Comic: Garfield ohne Garfield

Travors found a German review of G-G:

Review of G-G on a German newspaper site. Which is nice. Um… I think.

Instead of doing inane exercises, I spent my German class trying to decipher the text (and probably butchered in the process). A few excerpts:

Garfield alone was already funny. But Garfield minus Garfield is much funnier still. The quite sober pictures the Irishman Dan Walsh displays on his Garfield minus Garfield website prove that the true presence lies in the absence…

Garfield minus Garfield gives a clear view of someone who has to date always stood in the shadows of his pets: Jon Arbuckle himself. First in the absence of Garfield, Jon’s true philosophical value reveals itself…

A look, as we know, says more than many words. The Irishman Dan Walsh recognized this too, as he came up with the idea of displaying “Garfield minus Garfield”. Thus he simply retouched Garfield out of the comics and put the delusion of Jon Arbuckle’s everyday life out in the open. Don’t we all recognize ourselves in these pictures?

And the conclusion:

But yet Garfield is always there. Just so, sat on the shoulders of the onlooker, whispering to him the text the image lacks. Often letting Jon Arbuckle’s words stand uncommented in the room is even better… Nobody understands him — except the red sock. And again, therein lies the universal truth: isn’t it a little like that for all of us?
