The Last Question by Isaac Asimov
The thing with reading classic sci-fi stories is that they start out seeming hopelessly cliché or contrived — granted, some of these ideas were made into cliches after appearing in stories by Clarke, Asimov, etc. — but then you get to the end. And it’s so worth it. (Other examples.)
