Late Bloomers

“Why do we equate genius with precocity?”, asks Malcolm Gladwell in the New Yorker. A while back Jason Kottke posted about David Galenson’s theories about early peakers versus late bloomers. Via that post, we find this article, which describes how Gladwell’s initial article on the topic was rejected:

When Mr. Gladwell submitted an article about Mr. Galenson’s ideas to The New Yorker, he suffered his first rejection from the magazine. “You buy this Galenson stuff?” Mr. Gladwell recalled his editor saying to him. “What are you, crazy?”

Apparently, the New Yorker changed their minds. Which is just as well, because the material is interesting.
