Tara Donovan creates installations that mimic how things grow — out of all kinds of everyday objects. Here, Colony, made of pencils.

I like fractals, I like natural structures, and I like infinities and recursion, so I suppose it’s only natural that loads and loads of everyday pencils adding up to something that looks like it just grew on the spot appeals to me. On the other hand, I cannot for the life of me understand or appreciate a cube of glass. I simply don’t get it. I don’t see the art in it. (Anyone want to enlighten me on the postmodern wonders of glass cubes, or something?)
