There is an Alcoholics Anonymous, but what the world really needs is Celebrities Anonymous. Of course, it wouldn’t work because it’s essentially contradictory: celebrities are people who simply can’t show up to a meeting and expect not to be recognized. But the problem is real: the world is full of celebrities and wannabe celebrities who are addicted to a drug that is not recognized as a drug, namely attention. To get this drug, they do just as much stupid shit as alcoholics and junkies; the effects of overusing this drug are just as severe as those of alcoholism.
There were always people who were addicted to attention, but the current culture combined with modern technology makes it that much easier to indulge.
I wonder how long it will take before addiction to this dangerous drug will be recognized as an illness in the same way addiction to, say, narcotics is starting to be seen. Actually, I wonder how many celebrities (who let fame get to their head) and wannabe celebrities (who let the desire for fame get to their head) would qualify for currently recognized disorders such as Narcissistic personality disorder or Histrionic personality disorder. Since I despise amateur psychologists who employ their faulty understanding of what is already an inexact science in an amateurish way, I won’t attempt to actually diagnose any celebrities here, but many of them sure display signs — as do many of those who devote their lives to becoming famous.
