Two-Faced Django Part 1: Building a project that exists simultaniously on Facebook and the web

Is it just me, or is it cause for concern that even people proficient enough with programming to create a web application in Python and write a tutorial about it see Facebook and the web as separate entities? In the 1990s, a popular (and mythical) category error was to see the blue Internet Explorer E as the internet (“Oops! I think I deleted the internet!”). It seems the 2000s category error is to see Facebook (or YouTube, or Google, or Flickr, or whatever) as not being a website but being something on the side of the web. (link via montoya)
