More details on the redesign

Jeff Croft on his recent redesign (which is quite nice, if (as he himself points out) a little low-contrast), and why he doesn’t use Tumblr for his tumblelog:

Tumblr is awesome. I really, really like it. I’d recommend it to almost anyone. However, it isn’t quite robust enough for my needs. There are three main things I consider essential to this site that tumblr just can’t do:

  1. Comments: I’ve actually heard there are some third-party modules for adding comments to tumblr, but I’m not sure about that. I know the core product doesn’t include them.
  2. History: My big issue with tumblr is one of history. While you can have tumblr suck in RSS feeds, such as your flickr photos or del.icio.us links, it can only do this from the moment your join tumblr on. For me, that’s not good enough. I’ve got years of history on flickr, ma.gnolia, upcoming, and twitter, and I want all of it here on JeffCroft.com.
  3. Per-content type views: While tumblr is great at tumblelogs, I want a tumblelog to just be one way you can view my content — not the only way. If you want to just view photos, you should be able to. If you want to just view blog entries, you should be able to. And so on. Tumblr has no way (that I know of) of giving me archive views per-content type.

Just to be clear: tumblr is very cool, and I love a lot of the things they’ve done. It just wasn’t right for me, for these three main reasons.

Oh, and “Links in this entry” is a nice touch.
