Mashable: Amazon Announces Kindle eBook Reader
Cameron writes:
Truthfully, I don’t think ebooks are going to take off. People assume that ebooks haven’t taken off since there’s no de facto ebook reader, but I think it’s because ebooks don’t give you a tangible experience. I can see textbooks and newspapers being converted to digital soulless media, but I think masterful stories that people *love*, and give people a strong emotional response will stay in a tangible and solid form for a long time; it’s hard to have an emotional attachment to an ebook.
I think he’s right that the reason ebooks haven’t taken off is not the lack of a standard, good reader. But really, if you so love a good story, it doesn’t matter what media it’s on, as long as it’s a decent experience to read from.
Good stories are good regardless of media. I don’t give a shit whether a story is in paperback or leatherbound original from the 1100s; the reason I don’t read ebooks is because reading long stretches of text on a computer screen becomes painful.
