Urban Legends Reference Pages: The Golden Compass
This is hilarious. Instead of actually going out, getting the books and reading them, people go to Snopes. Oh well.
Of course, the conspiracy theory is not true. If people took the time to read the books, they would see that they’re not about what they think it’s about. I guess thinking about deeper layers of meaning is too complicated for some people.
Anyway, His Dark Materials rocks. It’s good fantasy, regardless of whether or not you like the themes. Incidentally, I also don’t have anything against the Narnia books; of course, I had them read to me when I was about 5 or 6, so I dunno what I’d think now. I guess the sort of people who find Harry Potter mildly offensive can be expected to go ballistic when a series comes along where the Church is the bad guy, where the afterlife sucks, and where God turns out to not be God at all, but rather a pathetic bastard.
But then again, I’m an atheist, what do I know.
