Mary Roach: 10 things you didn't know about orgasm

Surely everyone has a quarter of an hour of their lives to watch a fun talk about one of the awesomest things around, orgasm. Some fun facts from this video:

  • Fetuses can masturbate. (She has ultrasound pictures!)
  • You can stimulate orgasm in brain dead people. Also, some people can get orgasms by rubbing their knees, brushing their teeth, or simply thinking.
  • A once-prominent medical theory said that orgasm in females helps send the sperm along its way, thereby helping fertility. This theory was called upsuck. It was actually tested on humans, using artificial sperm with a radioopic substance, so it would show up on X-rays. Women were then injected with this, and sat in front of an X-ray machine masturbating, so as to check the upsuck hypothesis. As it turns out, it’s wrong in humans, but there’s some evidence for it in pigs.
  • Alfred Kinsey ran an experiment to find the average distance sperm travels during ejaculation. He measured 300 men’s ejaculation, and found that for most men, the ejaculate doesn’t travel very far at all, but the longest was just shy of eight feet.
